Calling All Killaloe Fair Enthusiasts

Don't you just love Nancy Brookes' painting of the Fair site? It brings back so many memories of sweltering days, sudden rainfalls, and warm, magical summer nights.
Makes me think about how I’d like to experience it all again, and how I’d like my grandkids to be there. I know that many of you feel the same way.
Well, it's decision time!
We have to decide whether or not we’re going to re-build the infrastructure
at the fair site so it can be used again for gatherings and festivals.
This past winter, the board had some back sections of the fair site
logged – with careful scrutiny and an eye to stand improvement
rather than immediate profit – and the funds generated could help
with rehabilitating the site. But before they undertake that rather over-whelming
project, the board needs to know there is community support for it.
I think the community (the cultural and historical community, not just
the geographic one) does want to make the site a useable gathering-place
again. Some people want to do other things there, too; and we can probably
make some of those happen. But first we need water, electricity, a stage,
and some kind of washroom facilities.
If you want the fair site to be re-built,
here’s what you need to do:
Become a member of the fair. Go to the Membership page to sign up over a secure connection or to find out about other ways of becoming a member. Membership costs $20 per year. By the way, it costs $2,000 annually to own the land, (mostly taxes and insurance) so we need 100 members just to stay alive.
Get all the old Killa-loonies you know to become members, especially your family. Create a fad! Start a movement! Tell your kids it’s cool to be a supporter of the Killaloe Fair.
Make a donation of time or money. There is still lots of room for volunteer labour, but much of what needs to be done will take money. Donate what you can. We need:
- People to write a constitution and do the paperwork to apply for charitable status.
- People to help with building. We realize many of you live far away, so we don’t expect you to show up with a hammer and shovel. But can you help with designing structures or systems, or sourcing goods or services?
- Of course, building materials and people who can show up with tools and enthusiasm when there's a need for bodies to get things done.
- Someone to maintain the membership database.
- Someone to do a newsletter, maybe?
- Eventually, we hope we will need people to help plan, produce, and promote events – be they big or small.
